Best Areas to Stay in Accra as a Tourist (2026 Guide)

Accra is Ghana's vibrant capital β€” a city of over 4 million people where modern high-rises stand next to open-air markets, and the smell of grilled tilapia drifts through traffic. Where you stay in Accra shapes your entire experience, whether you're a tourist from abroad, a Ghanaian travelling from another region, or a diaspora visitor coming home for a wedding, funeral, or family reunion.

This guide breaks down the best neighborhoods for short-stay apartments in 2026, with honest advice on what each area offers, what it costs, and who it suits best.

1. East Legon β€” Upscale & Convenient

East Legon is the top pick for diaspora visitors and business travellers. This upscale residential area features modern apartments, gated communities, tree-lined streets, and some of the best restaurants in the city. The A&C Mall is the local shopping hub, and Trasacco Valley β€” one of Accra's most exclusive estates β€” sits on its edge.

You're about 15 minutes from Kotoka International Airport with light traffic, and Uber and Bolt rides are easy to get at any hour. For food, try Coco Lounge for continental dining, Cafe Kwae for brunch, or the numerous local chop bars along the main road for banku, fufu, and jollof.

East Legon is also increasingly popular with Ghanaians relocating from abroad who need a comfortable base for a few weeks while they sort out housing or business. If you value security, reliable power (most buildings here have backup generators), and proximity to everything, this is your area.

Best for: Diaspora visitors, families, business travellers, long-term stays

2. Airport Residential Area β€” Business Hub

If your trip is strictly business, Airport Residential is hard to beat. You're minutes from the airport, surrounded by embassies, corporate offices, international hotels, and conference centres. The area is quiet and well-maintained, with leafy compounds and 24-hour security in most buildings.

Accra Mall β€” the city's first modern shopping centre β€” is a short drive away, with supermarkets, banks, a cinema, and international food chains. The "37" Military Hospital is nearby, making this area a practical choice for medical tourism or visiting patients. Many NGOs and international organisations are based here too.

Power cuts are less frequent in Airport Residential thanks to priority grid allocation and most properties having inverters or generators. It's one of the quieter parts of central Accra β€” perfect if you need to work during the day and sleep well at night.

Best for: Business trips, medical visits, corporate retreats, conferences

3. Osu β€” Nightlife, Culture & Street Energy

Oxford Street in Osu is Accra's most famous strip. This is where the city comes alive at night β€” restaurants, rooftop bars, live music venues, and art galleries line both sides of the road. Republic Bar is a local institution for craft cocktails, Frankie's is a favourite for burgers and ice cream, and the Osu Night Market (weekends) is a must-visit for souvenirs and street food.

Beyond the nightlife, Osu has real cultural depth. The old Osu Castle (Christiansborg Castle) sits on the coast β€” a Danish-built fort that served as the seat of Ghana's government until 2013. The area has a creative, youthful energy with art pop-ups, street murals, and independent fashion boutiques.

A word of caution: Osu can be noisy at night, especially on weekends. If you're a light sleeper, look for apartments on side streets rather than directly on Oxford Street. That said, if you want to experience the heartbeat of modern Accra nightlife, there's no better place.

Best for: Young travellers, couples, creatives, nightlife lovers, first-time tourists

4. Cantonments β€” Diplomatic Calm

Home to foreign embassies, high commissions, and the residences of diplomats and senior government officials, Cantonments is one of Accra's most peaceful and well-planned neighborhoods. Tree-lined streets, large walled compounds, and a noticeable security presence make it feel worlds away from the bustle of central Accra β€” even though it's only a 10-minute drive to Osu or the airport.

Cantonments City Park is a green oasis perfect for morning jogs or an evening walk. Several international schools are nearby (Lincoln Community School, GIS), making this area popular with families on extended stays. The restaurants here tend to be quieter and more upscale β€” think wine bars and bistros rather than street food joints.

Best for: Families with children, long-term professional stays, diplomatic visits, anyone who values peace and quiet

5. Labone & Ridge β€” Central & Walkable

Sitting between Osu and Cantonments, Labone and Ridge give you the best of both worlds: walkable access to restaurants and nightlife, but residential calm when you come home. Labone in particular has become a foodie destination β€” Labone Coffee, The Republic Bar & Grill, and Azmera (Ethiopian cuisine) are all here.

Ridge is one of Accra's oldest planned neighborhoods, home to Ridge Hospital (a major public hospital), several churches, and government offices. It's central enough that you can reach most parts of Accra within 20 minutes. Many Ghanaians from other regions who come to Accra for work β€” nurses, bankers, consultants β€” prefer to stay in Labone or Ridge for the convenience and moderate pricing.

Best for: Professionals, foodies, couples, anyone who wants a central location without the noise of Osu

6. Adabraka & Asylum Down β€” Budget-Friendly Central

Not every trip requires a luxury apartment. If you're a Ghanaian travelling to Accra for a job interview, exam, wedding, or short business, Adabraka and Asylum Down offer affordable short-stay options right in the city centre. You're close to Kwame Nkrumah Circle (a major transport hub), and trotros to virtually anywhere in Accra are easy to find.

The area is busy and vibrant β€” expect street vendors, honking taxis, and the general energy of central Accra. Accommodation here is simpler but functional, and you'll spend a fraction of what East Legon or Airport Residential costs. Many traders from Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tamale stay here when they come to Accra for business at Makola or the Ministries.

Best for: Budget travellers, local business travellers, students, job seekers

7. Spintex Road β€” Affordable & Growing

Spintex has transformed from an industrial corridor into one of Accra's fastest-growing residential areas. Young Ghanaian professionals, startup founders, and small business owners are moving here for the newer apartment buildings, lower rents, and proximity to the Tema Motorway. The area has its own restaurants, gyms, and nightlife spots, so you don't necessarily need to go into central Accra for entertainment.

The main downside is traffic β€” the single Spintex Road can get heavily congested during rush hours. But if your business is on the east side of Accra or in Tema, Spintex is a smart, affordable base.

Best for: Young professionals, budget-conscious travellers, anyone with business in East Accra or Tema

Getting Around Accra

Uber and Bolt are widely available in Accra and are the easiest way to get around. A typical ride across town costs between GHS 20-50. Trotros (shared minibuses) are the cheapest option β€” fares start from GHS 3-5 β€” but routes can be confusing for first-time visitors. Many apartment hosts can arrange airport pickup for you, so ask when you book.

If you're staying for a week or more, consider renting a car through a local service. Driving in Accra takes confidence β€” the roads are busy and signage is minimal β€” but it gives you the most flexibility, especially for day trips to Cape Coast, Aburi, or Akosombo.

Best Time to Visit Accra

Accra is warm year-round, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to do:

  • November β€” March (dry season): The most comfortable weather. Best for sightseeing and beach trips. December is peak season β€” the diaspora comes home, and Accra's "Detty December" party scene is legendary.
  • April β€” June (rainy season): Heavier rainfall, especially in June. Prices drop and crowds thin. Good for budget travellers who don't mind afternoon showers.
  • July β€” August: The Homowo Festival in Ga Mashie (central Accra) is a major cultural event worth timing your visit around.
  • September β€” October: The second rainy spell. Fewer tourists, lower prices.
